Can Casual Tourists Visit the Nicobar Island?

Unfortunately, No! The Nicobar Islands, part of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, are largely off-limits to casual travelers. As a designated tribal reserve, special permits are required, rarely granted to non-research individuals, to protect the indigenous tribes’ culture and way of life. Strict regulations by the Indian government aim to preserve the islands’ unique biodiversity and fragile ecosystem.

Unlike the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands have minimal infrastructure for tourism, making it difficult for casual visitors. The focus on protecting Indigenous rights and privacy keeps the area pristine and protected, allowing only research and official access while encouraging travelers to explore the Andaman Islands instead.

Reaching the Andaman Islands

(Port Blair- Havelock Island- Neil Island)

Getting to the Andaman Islands typically involves a multi-leg journey. Flights to the main airport in Port Blair are primarily routed through Chennai, with occasional options via Kolkata. Due to the distance from mainland cities like Pune or Mumbai, ticket prices tend to be on the higher side, as you’ll essentially be booking four separate sectors: your origin city to Chennai, Chennai to Port Blair, and then the return leg.

It’s important to note that flights to the Andamans can be limited, especially during peak season, so it’s advisable to book your tickets well in advance to secure the best deals and availability.

A) Port Blair

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is often mistaken for a beach destination (which it is!), but in reality, it is more of a bustling town, and most hotels do not offer ocean views. While it serves as the primary gateway to the islands, it’s generally recommended to focus more on destinations like Havelock Island for your true beach holiday experience.

However, spending a few days in Port Blair is still essential for a couple of key reasons:

Arrival and Departure Point

Your flights to and from the Andamans will be via Port Blair, so it’s the starting and ending point of your trip.

Historical Significance

Port Blair offers a rich history, with must-see attractions such as the Cellular Jail and its famous Light and Sound Show, as well as interesting museums. Typically, 2-3 nights in Port Blair should suffice, especially if you’re eager to spend most of your time amidst nature on the outer islands.

Some of the top attractions in Port Blair include:

  1. Cellular Jail:

A historical monument, also known as “Kala Pani,” stands as a grim reminder of India’s struggle for independence. The light and sound show held in the evening brings the history of the jail to life.

  2. Ross Island

Once the administrative headquarters of the British, Ross Island now offers a glimpse into the past with its ruins of old buildings and churches. The island is also home to friendly deer and peacocks.

  3. Anthropological Museum

This museum provides insights into the lives of the indigenous tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, showcasing their tools, art, and way of life.

  4. Samudrika Naval Marine Museum

Managed by the Indian Navy, this museum offers a comprehensive view of the marine life, history, and culture of the islands. Exhibits include models of islands, tribal artefacts, and marine specimens.

  5. Chidiya Tapu

Known as the “Bird Island,” Chidiya Tapu is a picturesque spot perfect for birdwatching and witnessing stunning sunsets. The lush green mangroves and serene beaches add to its charm.

  6. Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Located in Wandoor, about 29 km from Port Blair, this park consists of 15 islands and offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving to explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life.

  7. Corbyn’s Cove Beach

A popular beach close to Port Blair, ideal for swimming and water sports. The palm-fringed shoreline is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea.

  8. Jogger’s Park:

A peaceful park located on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of Port Blair, the runway of the Veer Savarkar International Airport, and the surrounding sea.

  9. Mount Harriet National Park

The highest peak in the South Andaman archipelago, it offers excellent trekking opportunities and breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and sea.

These sites provide a well-rounded experience of Port Blair, combining history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a rewarding destination for all types of travelers.

B) Havelock Island – The Heart of Your Andaman Holiday

While Port Blair serves as the gateway, the real gem of the Andaman Islands is undoubtedly Havelock Island. Known for its breathtaking beaches and vibrant marine life, Havelock is where you should spend the majority of your vacation time. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock is world-famous for its natural beauty and is often ranked among the best beaches in Asia. With its pristine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Radhanagar is the quintessential tropical paradise.

Activities on Havelock Island

  1. Scuba Diving

Havelock is renowned for its clear waters and rich marine life, making it a perfect spot for scuba diving. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, there are numerous diving spots for beginners as well as experienced.

  2. Snorkeling

For those who prefer staying closer to the surface, snorkeling is an excellent way to explore the vibrant coral reefs and colourful marine life of Andamans.

  3. Beach Relaxation

Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among the best beaches in Asia, offers pristine white sand and clear turquoise waters. It’s perfect for a relaxing day under the sun, enjoying the calm waves, and soaking in the natural beauty.
Kalapathar Beach is another serene location ideal for watching the sunrise or enjoying some quiet time.

  4. Kayaking

Kayaking in the calm waters around Havelock offers a peaceful way to explore the island’s mangroves and coastline. You can also opt for night kayaking to witness the magical bioluminescence in the water, an unforgettable experience where the sea glows with tiny lights.

  5. Trekking

The trek from Elephant Beach is a short, scenic walk through lush forests, offering stunning views of the island. It’s a great way to explore the natural beauty of Havelock beyond its beaches.

  6. Glass-Bottom Boat Rides

If you’re not keen on getting wet but still want to witness the stunning marine life, glass-bottom boat rides are a great option. These boats allow you to observe the underwater world from the comfort of the boat.

  7. Birdwatching

The island is home to a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatchers.

  8. Cycling Around the Island

Exploring the island on a bicycle is a great way to soak in its beauty. You can rent bicycles and ride along the scenic routes, passing through villages, beaches, and forests. These activities cater to a wide range of travelers, from thrill-seekers to those simply looking to relax and enjoy nature. Havelock Island truly offers something for everyone, making it the heart of your Andaman adventure.

C) Neil Island: A Quieter Alternative

Just a short boat ride from Havelock is Neil Island. For those eager to explore multiple islands, staying at Neil Island is an option. However, we do not advice spending any nights here…whatever nights the guest has are better spent at Havelock itself since that is a relatively more scenic beach…and why add another check-in and check-out (which you have mentioned). However, if you must, then 2 odd nights should suffice.

D) Baratang Island – For the Adventurous

A trip to Baratang Island is a must-consider for the more adventurous travellers (and not for a leisure traveler, why? Read on). Baratang is known for its unique Mud Volcanoes, spectacular Limestone Caves, and serene beaches. It is also one of the few places in India where you can find active mud volcanoes.

However, this does not come recommended for leisure travellers…
The journey to Baratang, however, requires a very early start (around 3:00 AM) and passing through dense jungles inhabited by the Jarawa Tribe, which adds to the allure and challenge of the experience. While Baratang offers a raw and unspoiled beauty, it’s better suited for explorers rather than leisurely travelers.

We strongly advise against attempting a hectic day trip from Port Blair to Baratang, where you start before dawn and return late at night. Instead, consider staying overnight in Baratang, giving you the chance to relax and explore the Limestone Caves and Mud Volcanoes at a more leisurely pace.
