Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Walking into the Heart of the Himalayas
Some journeys remain on your bucket list for years, not because they are difficult to reach, but because they promise something extraordinary. The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek had been one such dream for me.
In May 2026, I finally got the opportunity to experience one of Nepal’s most iconic Himalayan treks. Looking back today, I realize it wasn’t merely a trek. It was eight days of walking through changing landscapes, meeting warm-hearted mountain communities, listening to roaring rivers, climbing endless stone steps, and finally standing amidst some of the highest mountains on Earth.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful hikes. After completing it, I can confidently say it truly deserves every bit of that reputation.
This trek requires two permits; the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area permit) and the TIMS Card which are usually arranged by the operators you are travelling with.

The Magnificent Annapurna Range
The Annapurna Massif is among the most spectacular mountain systems in the Himalayas.
The surrounding peaks range from approximately 6,400 metres to over 8,091 metres, while Annapurna Base Camp itself sits at 4,130 metres (13,550 ft).
Unlike many Himalayan treks where the destination is viewed from a distance, Annapurna Base Camp offers something unique.
You actually walk into the heart of the mountains.
The trail enters the famous Annapurna Sanctuary, a protected natural amphitheatre encircled by towering Himalayan peaks.

As you climb higher, the landscape transforms dramatically.
- Dense subtropical forests
- Rainforest-like vegetation
- Moss-covered trees
- Rhododendron forests
- Alpine vegetation
- Open glacial terrain above the tree line
Every day feels like trekking through a completely different world.
Our Route to Annapurna Base Camp
While the Annapurna Base Camp Trek itself is an 8-day trek, travellers from India should plan for an 11-day itinerary to comfortably include domestic travel within Nepal.
The trek was completed comfortably over 11 days, allowing enough time to acclimatize and soak in the magnificent scenery. After arrival in Kathmandu and a flight to Pokhra, the trail followed this route:
Ghandruk → Chomrung → Bamboo → Dovan → Deurali → Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) → Annapurna Base Camp → Bamboo → Jhinu Danda → Pokhara

Day 1 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek– Arrival in Kathmandu
Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital city. Depending on your flight schedule, spend the day exploring the city’s bustling streets, heritage sites, or simply relaxing before the adventure begins.

Day 2 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Fly to Pokhara & Drive to the Trailhead and Trek to Ghandruk
Distance: ~2.5 km
Elevation: 1,640 m → 1,940 m
Took an early morning scenic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, often regarded as one of the most beautiful mountain flights in the world. From Pokhara, drove to the trek’s starting point near Ghandruk. Our Himalayan adventure began with a gentle climb towards Ghandruk, a beautiful traditional Gurung village known for its slate-roofed stone houses and rich mountain culture.
As evening approached, the clouds slowly cleared to reveal breathtaking views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.
It was the perfect introduction to the mountains that would soon surround us.

Day 3 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Ghandruk to Chomrung
Distance: ~14 km
Elevation: 1,940 m → 1,450 m → 2,170 m
Locals jokingly refer to this section as “Nepali Flat.”
There is absolutely nothing flat about it.
The day began with a steep descent to the Kimrong Khola, crossing a suspension bridge before tackling a long, relentless climb up the opposite ridge towards Chomrung.
The Himalayan rule became very clear:
“Whatever you descend today, you must climb tomorrow.”

Day 4 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Chomrung to Dovan
Distance: ~11 km
Elevation: 2,170 m → 1,860 m → 2,600 m
This was one of the most physically demanding days.
More than 2,000 stone steps took us down to the Chomrung Khola, followed by another challenging ascent towards Sinuwa.
The trail then entered a lush valley where the landscape changed dramatically.
Towering trees, thick vegetation, flowing streams and humid air made the surroundings resemble a tropical rainforest rather than the Himalayas.
The Modi Khola River accompanied us throughout much of the day, its constant roar becoming the soundtrack of the trek.

Day 5 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Dovan to Deurali
Distance: ~8 km
Elevation: 2,600 m → 3,230 m
This was arguably the most scenic day of the entire trek.
The trail climbed steadily alongside the roaring Modi Khola Gorge, enclosed by enormous rock walls that rose thousands of feet above us.
Waterfalls cascaded down sheer cliffs while the vegetation gradually shifted from dense forests to alpine flora.
The region near Deurali is known to be avalanche-prone, making it one of the most dramatic sections of the route.
Nature here feels immense, powerful and humbling.

Day 6 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp
Distance: ~9 km
Elevation: 3,230 m → 3,700 m (Machhapuchhre Base Camp) → 4,130 m (ABC)
This was the day everyone had been waiting for.
The trail slowly climbed through a narrow valley before opening into an enormous glacial basin.
Walking beside crystal-clear mountain streams, colourful alpine flowers and snow-covered peaks felt almost surreal.
Before the final ascent to Annapurna Base Camp, I reached Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 metres), where the magnificent Fishtail Mountain seemed almost within touching distance. Considered sacred and untouched by climbers, its elegant twin summit stood proudly against the sky.

As altitude increased, every step demanded greater effort.
Breathing became slower.
Walking pace naturally reduced.
Yet excitement kept everyone moving.
Finally, we reached Annapurna Base Camp.

Standing Inside Nature’s Greatest Amphitheatre
No photograph truly prepares you for the experience.
Annapurna Base Camp is often called a natural amphitheatre, and rightly so.
Instead of viewing mountains from afar, you stand in the centre of a vast snow-covered bowl completely surrounded by towering Himalayan giants.
Among the magnificent peaks are:
- Annapurna I
- Annapurna South
- Machhapuchhre (Fishtail)
- Hiunchuli
- Gangapurna
- Annapurna III
The mountains rise dramatically on every side, creating one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas anywhere in the world.

A Sunrise I’ll Never Forget
When we reached ABC, clouds had completely covered the mountains.
Like every trekker, we hoped for better weather the next morning.
At 4:45 AM, we stepped outside into the freezing Himalayan air.
The sky had cleared.
Slowly, the first rays of the rising sun touched the snow-covered peaks.
Within minutes, the mountains transformed into glowing towers of gold.
The entire Annapurna range glittered brilliantly under the morning light.
It instantly reminded me of the unforgettable scenes from the classic film Mackenna’s Gold.
It was one of those rare moments that remain etched in memory forever.

Day 7 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo
Distance: ~14 km
Elevation: 4,130 m → 2,310 m
The descent was long but far easier on the lungs than the climb.
Returning through familiar trails offered a different perspective.
The landscapes we had climbed through over several days now unfolded in reverse, allowing us to appreciate their beauty even more.

Day 8 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Bamboo to Jhinu Danda
Distance: ~9 km
Elevation: 2,310 m → 2,170 m → 1,780 m
After days of trekking, Jhinu Danda offered the perfect reward.
The village is famous for its natural hot springs located beside the river.
Relaxing in the warm mineral-rich pools after days of continuous walking was pure bliss.
The experience felt remarkably similar to a traditional Turkish Hammam, soothing every tired muscle.

Day 9 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Jhinu Danda to Pokhara
Our final day marked the end of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
As we drove back to Pokhara, the mountains slowly disappeared behind us, but their memories remained vividly alive.
Some journeys end at the destination.
Others stay with you forever.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek belongs to the second kind.

Day 10 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Pokhara to Kathmandu
After completing the trek and spending a relaxing night in Pokhara, we boarded a short flight back to Kathmandu. The return journey gave time to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days. Back in the capital, we enjoyed a leisurely evening, explored a few local markets, and picked up some souvenirs before preparing for my journey home.

Day 11 of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Kathmandu to India
As I boarded my flight back to India, I carried much more than photographs and souvenirs. I returned with unforgettable memories of walking through the Annapurna Sanctuary, witnessing the golden sunrise over the snow-clad peaks, and experiencing the warmth of the people and the beauty of the Himalayas.
Why Annapurna Base Camp is Special
Unlike many Himalayan treks, Annapurna Base Camp offers extraordinary diversity within a relatively short duration.
During just eight days, you experience:
- Traditional Gurung villages
- Suspension bridges
- Dense subtropical forests
- Rainforest-like valleys
- Alpine meadows
- Glacial landscapes
- Towering waterfalls
- Snow-covered peaks
- Natural hot springs
- One of the world’s finest mountain amphitheatres
Very few treks offer such incredible variety.

Final Thoughts
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is not just about reaching an altitude of 4,130 metres. It is about witnessing nature in its grandest form, walking through landscapes that constantly evolve, and discovering how small we are in the presence of the Himalayas.
The golden sunrise over Annapurna, the serenity of the Sanctuary, the thunder of the Modi Khola, the endless stone staircases, and the rejuvenating hot springs of Jhinu Danda together create an experience that is impossible to forget.
For anyone who loves mountains, this trek deserves a place at the very top of the bucket list.
