This extended Bhutan journey offers a deeper exploration of the kingdom’s valleys, monasteries, and Himalayan landscapes. Entering via Phuentsholing, the route ascends gradually to Thimphu, crosses the scenic Dochula Pass to Punakha, continues to Paro’s sacred sites, and concludes with a relaxed return through southern Bhutan into India. Day 1 – Arrival & Transfer to Phuentsholing | Gateway to Bhutan
Arrive at Bagdogra Airport (126 m | 412 ft) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (140 m | 460 ft). Meet & greet and drive to Phuentsholing (293 m | 961 ft), approx. 165 km | 4–5 hrs. Complete Bhutan immigration formalities with assistance and check in to the hotel. Overnight stay in Phuentsholing.. -
Day 2 – Phuentsholing to Thimphu | Into the Himalayas
After breakfast, complete visa/permit formalities if pending and drive to Thimphu (2,320 m | 7,656 ft), approx. 158 km | 5–6 hrs. The scenic ascent follows river valleys and forested slopes. On arrival, check in and relax. Overnight stay in Thimphu. -
Day 3 – Thimphu Local Sightseeing | Culture & Traditions
Explore Thimphu’s cultural highlights including Sangaygang View Point (2,865 m | 9,397 ft) for panoramic city views, Buddha Dordenma, Institute for Zorig Chusum (Traditional Arts & Crafts), the Textiles Museum, handicraft shops, Zangthopelri Lhakhang, Simply Bhutan, and the Motithang Takin Preservation Centre. Overnight stay in Thimphu. -
Day 4 – Thimphu to Punakha / Wangdi | Dochula Pass
After a leisurely breakfast, drive to Punakha / Wangdi (1,273 m | 4,177 ft), approx. 70 km | 3–3.5 hrs. Cross the scenic Dochula Pass (3,080 m | 10,102 ft), known for sweeping Himalayan views. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Punakha / Wangdi. -
Day 5 – Punakha Sightseeing OR Gangtey Valley Excursion
Option 1 – Punakha Local: Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, walk across the Suspension Bridge, and enjoy a 30-minute walk (one way) to Chimi Lhakhang. Optional white-water rafting on the Punakha River (direct payment). Overnight stay in Punakha / Wangdi. OR Option 2 – Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley: Full-day excursion to Phobjikha Valley (3,000 m | 9,845 ft), approx. 85 km | 3–3.5 hrs one way. Visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre and **Gangtey Monastery. Return to Punakha / Wangdi. Overnight stay. -
Day 6 – Punakha to Paro via Lamperi | Botanical Trails
After breakfast, drive to Paro (2,200 m | 7,218 ft), approx. 148 km | 4–4.5 hrs. En route stop at Royal Botanical Garden Lamperi. On arrival, check in and relax. Overnight stay in Paro. -
Day 7 – Paro Sightseeing OR Tiger’s Nest OR Haa Valley
Option 1 – Paro Local: Visit Dungtse Lhakhang, Bird’s-eye View Point overlooking Paro Valley and Paro Airport, Ta Dzong, Rinpung Dzong, and Kyichu Lhakhang. Overnight stay in Paro. OR Option 2 – Tiger’s Nest Hike: Early start for a hike to Taktsang Lhakhang. Uphill trek approx. 2.5–3 hrs one way through pine forests; a shorter hike is possible up to the cafeteria viewpoint. OR Option 3 – Haa Valley Excursion: Full-day excursion to Haa Valley (2,718 m | 8,917 ft) via Chele La Pass (3,988 m | 13,080 ft). Visit Haa Dzong, Lhakhang Karpo, Lhakhang Nagpo, and Wangchulo Dzong. Return to Paro. Overnight stay. -
Day 8 – Paro to Phuentsholing & Siliguri | Return Journey
After breakfast, drive from Paro to Phuentsholing / Jaigaon (approx. 176 km | 4–5 hrs). Complete Bhutan exit formalities at Karbandi and Indian immigration at Jaigaon. Continue to Siliguri (approx. 165 km | 4–5 hrs). Check in and relax. Overnight stay in Siliguri. -
Day 9 – Siliguri to Bagdogra / NJP | Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (approx. 15 km | 40–45 mins) for onward connection, concluding a serene Bhutan experience.
